About halfway between Redhill and Reigate, the Lemonade Lane shop is the dream come true of mother and daughter team Marilyn and Hayley, whose desire to open and run a home style and gift shop has been well and truly realised.
If the outside of the shop is cute, inside it’s a veritable Aladdin’s Cave of unique, unusual and handmade items with everything from key rings to sculptures, ceramics, jewellery, kids toys and more, with much of it sourced from local artists. There’s something for every room and even the garden.
Marilyn started out by making and selling hand poured candles from home. The success of that buoyed her on to seek out a retail space and, about 2 years ago, she found the little shop on Linkfield Corner (just off the Doynings Roundabout between Redhill and Reigate town centres). Hayley joined soon after and they both work the shop full time.
With so much in the store, we wondered how long it would take Hayley to come up with a favourite piece. About 10 seconds as it turns out, with a sculpture of a girl leaping over a fence being the chosen item – “I love the optimism, movement and general feeling of it.” – by the local artist Gurda Rubenstein who is 80 years old and lives in Reigate.
Being a little way out of the town centre means people have mainly stumbled upon the shop by accident, but Marilyn and Hayley are intent on changing that. Alongside active Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages, they’re currently sponsoring the tickets at Redhill’s Harlequin Theatre.
And to keep the clients coming back for more, Lemonade Lane also runs a loyalty scheme. You get a stamp for every £10 spent, and after 10 stamps you get £10 off your next purchase.
Resist if you dare.
