Nic Betchley bought the former Les Alan butcher shop in Redhill in 2016 after the same family had run it for three generations, going right back to the 1960s. Nic’s old boss took it over from his dad, who took it over from his dad, but he had no interested son to carry on the trade.
A lifelong local resident, born in Redhill and living in Reigate today, Nic’s history with the butchers goes back far longer than 2016, to when he began working there as a Saturday boy in 2003. He loved it from day one and progressed to part-time, then full-time before deciding to make the business his own.
Despite the relatively new ownership, Betchley’s is built on longstanding relationships with its suppliers that go back decades, which gives Nic confidence in the quality of the meat coming in.
The shop stocks Scottish beef – “personally I think it’s nicer” – and Suffolk chickens – “because they’re the best” – but is perhaps most famous for its home-made burgers. They come in 4, 6 and 8oz varieties which, upon request, can be made with chilli.
Betchley’s has also built a reputation for sausages, with UK favourites like Cumberland and Lincolnshire doing a good trade. But when the homemade Marmite and cheese bangers – yes you read that right – hit the shelves, you need to get in quick as they’re a major hit with the neighbours.
If you do pop in, you’ll notice the speed of service and how you’re rarely stuck in a lengthy queue. That’s because Nic prepares the steaks, joints, cuts, burgers and sausages in advance. “I’m very organised and I’m the main one who serves, so I lay things out ready in the cabinets or fridge first thing. People don’t like queueing.”
As well as customers to the shop, Betchley’s offers home deliveries and also supplies to schools, pubs, cafes and restaurants, so you could easily end up sampling Nic’s wares wherever you are in the neighbourhood.
So does Nic dream of a new line of inheritance to carry on the family name? Is there a son just waiting to take over? “No, I have five daughters! But my 7-year old is really interested in the shop.”
