Serving up artisan street food from a converted horse box, Mike Davies wasn’t always a stallion of mobile catering. In fact, he spent 30 years in IT.

Like a lot of Redhill and Reigate locals we speak to, Mike reached a crossroads in life and began wondering how his future might look. Thinking about his passions, it was cooking for friends and family that gave him the most pleasure. And having served behind the bar of various sports club he’d been a member of, and cooking every Thursday for 15-35 people at his tennis club, he set upon the idea of a mobile food and drink concept.

Not keen on a standard catering trailer, Mike came across images of converted horse boxes and, when one came up for sale, he jumped at the opportunity. While having it kitted out he enlisted the family’s help in coming up with a name, and, shortly afterwards, On The Hoof was born!

That was in January this year and since then Mike has built up a healthy stream of venues, dishing out gourmet burgers and kebabs with locally sourced wild boar, venison and lamb, along with craft beers, Pimms and even speciality coffee at places like the Prince of Wales in Reigate, The Garibaldi and The White Lion in Redhill, The Limes in Merstham and farmers markets in Epsom and Walton on Thames.

With On The Hoof having done so well and so soon, you could say it’s off to a galloping start.
